Write About Math: Addition to 100 Without Regrouping

Hey, y'all! We've been working on metacognition a lot in math this year in our classroom. My students started the year with very little number sense and basically just waited for me to hand them the answers. That's not going to happen. So now, we write about math, explaining our thinking step-by-step with our Write About Math pages.

We've done this a lot with simple addition and subtraction, but now we're working on adding bigger numbers within 100. We use base ten blocks A LOT to show our work and process our thinking. It will make it a hundred times easier when we get to regrouping!

The first step in getting kids to understand if their answer is reasonable or not is getting them to think about what they are doing. If they're just guessing an answer and sometimes it's right, they don't really understand how to solve the problem. They may have a very broad understanding, but they definitely aren't solid with it.

When students can think through the steps they are taking to solve their problems, they develop a greater understanding of the task, their communication skills grow, and it is easier to see (for you and them) where any mistakes are happening so it can be fixed. When students simply write an incorrect answer, it's not always obvious where the misunderstanding is happening.

In this set, we start with adding 2-digit numbers and 1-digit numbers. Then, we work on adding 2-digits to 10, 2-digits to multiples of 10, and then 2-digits with 2-digits. All without regrouping. (You can find the addition with regrouping set here!)

The full addition within 100 resource can be found in my TPT store here. It will be part of a growing bundle of math prompts designed to take you through an entire school year. Be sure to follow me on TPT  because more will be coming shortly.

I hope this helps with your math block and getting students to slow down and think about what they're doing. Have a wonderful week and I'll talk to you soon.

Stay cozy,
