Teaching OI and OY Words with Phonics Games and Centers
Hey, y'all! My students have grown so much this year as readers and these phonics centers have been a huge support! We work on one new skill or spelling pattern a week and introduce a new set of phonics centers every Monday. These oi and oy phonics centers are designed to give new readers targeted practice reading words with those spelling patterns.
Over the last few years, I would get so frustrated with reading curriculums that would teach a new skill or spelling pattern but didn't offer students any direct practice reading words with those patterns. Sure, they'd practice ten or twelve and get tested on them at the end of the week. But to internalize it, my students needed more.
So, I created phonics games and activities to be used in centers and for interventions that focus on one skill set at a time. This year-long set of phonics centers has a set of games and interventions for every single spelling pattern my students learn in first grade. This week, we're working on words with the "oi" and "oy" spelling pattern.
When teaching your students these spellings, know that we we use "oi" at the beginning or middle of a syllable. Examples are words like: "oil," "boil," or "noise." We use the "oy" spelling pattern at the end of a syllable, like in "boy" or "loyal." When students know and understand these "rules" (there are always exceptions!) it makes it easier for them to apply these patterns to their writing.
For interventions, I use the matching cards and roll and read games in our small groups. I also use the Scoot game for an end of the week assessment. It gets the kids up and moving and is a quick way to check who is getting it and who needs more practice.
For centers, the kids use the read and write cards, the Bump games, trail games, hidden pictures games, and ABC order puzzles. I love these because my students can access them no matter how confident they are in their reading.
You can check out these phonics centers in my TPT store here. While you're there, be sure to follow me. I'm always adding new freebies and resources and you don't want to miss them!
