Short Vowel Phonics Games
Hey, y'all! This year, I have learned so much about phonics instruction it's almost scary. I started LETRS training this year and have done a TON of additional research on teaching phonics. But one thing I found my students lacking, and the science of reading research has expressed is essential, was explicit independent practice on the skills we were working on. That's where these new phonics games and interventions come into play!
During small groups, I started teaching these CVC games to my students and correcting any errors in their reading as we went. Then, when I could tell that they knew how to play the games independently (and wouldn't go to blows over the words--gotta love first graders), I moved the games to their literacy centers.
- Bump games
- Read and cover games
- Read and trace cards
- Memory or matching games
- Spin and write pages
- and a Scoot game
These games are just the start of a larger bundle of games that will align with HMH's Into Reading Structured Literacy program. In all, there will be about 40 sets of games when completed, covering skills like short and long vowels with different spelling patterns, digraphs, diphthongs, floss words, and more. With each new set, the bundle price will increase, so get 'em while you can!
