Letter Sounds Phonics Games and Interventions

Hey, y'all! Let's be honest. When I started teaching, teaching phonics was a little bit intimidating. I mean, I did what the "experts" told me to do at the time. But I knew there were some pieces missing; some dots that didn't quite connect. Over the years, I have learned what those missing pieces were and how to go about fixing it. 'Cause when you know better, you do better. These letter sounds phonics games help fill in those blanks. 

Our school district provides a reading curriculum that covers letter sounds, building words, etc. But the kids need more independent practice than what the curriculum provides. During our reading rotations, my students use these letter sound games and puzzles to review what they learned in kindergarten. 

The kids have matching cards, letter writing cards, sound sorts, letter puzzles, Bump games, and a Scoot game. For kindergarten students, these centers can be introduced as the letter sounds are taught and used throughout the school year. For first grade students, these make great beginning of the year review centers or small group interventions. The Scoot game is perfect for assessing sounds, too. 

I love these games because of how versatile they are. They can be used as independent practice, partner games, or small group games or interventions. They are simple enough that the kids can use them with minimal teacher support and the kids can coach each other through sounds they may not know.
