Back to School Morning Work for First Grade and a Freebie
Hey, y'all! One of the best things we did last year was implement a spiral review as part of our morning work. There is never enough time in the day to get everything in, but with this first grade spiral review morning work, we can practice a little bit of everything each day.
At the beginning of the year, we review skills learned in kindergarten. For math, we review adding and subtracting with visual supports, comparing numbers less than 20, identifying shapes, tally marks, subitizing, counting, number order, and more.
For reading, we review initial sounds, spelling CVC words, rhyming words, identifying simple sight words, and daily handwriting practice. In this back to school bundle, students review the proper way to write the letters A-Z in capitals and lowercase, as well as the numbers 0-9. As students progress throughout the year, they will build up to handwriting practice in full sentences.
We used these last year and the difference in my students' skills and confidence was outstanding. With the daily small-bites practice, the kids can always find something they can do independently and have something new to learn when we go over it.
This back to school unit has 36 days worth of kindergarten review to set your first graders up for success. If you start school in July or early August, you'll probably want to use this entire packet and jump into September's when you finish. If you start in late August or September, you'll probably want to use this until October.
To check out a free sample of this first unit, head over to my TPT store here. This unit is part of a year-long bundle that you can check out here. (Think: year-long bundle=stability, routines, and independence)
I hope you found some things that will work for you in your classroom. I'm always adding new resources and freebies to my TPT store, so be sure to follow me for all the latest and greatest.
